Well, I'm not THAT old, and I was recently told what LOL means, but for the longest time I had no idea what that meant when it was addressed to me in emails and so on. It's funny how you can lose touch with what's popular in contemporary culture: when I was a kid, the adults in my life hated the music I was into. As I got older, my tastes broadened, even as I continued to like the music of my ill-spent youth (NY Dolls, Stooges, Sex Pistols, Ramones, etc.). I learned to appreciate music as diverse as Billie Holliday, Jimmy Roselli and Elis Regina (considered one of Brazil's best singers). Now I've gotten to a point where I just can't get into the musical trends that are currently popular and I'm not sure if that's incipient old-age or just a growing inflexibility. Hip-Hop, for example, or the more recent examples of Country. I respect some of the artists who perform this music, I acknowledge the social conditions from which it has emerged, and, based on reviews I've read by people whose opinion I respect, I'll agree that the best of it has artistic merit, but I just can't get into it at all, not any of it. Sounds like noise to me, like the internal pounding of a bad migraine. I find myself starting to sound like my Dad when he would say, "What is that noise? Rolling Stones? That's supposed to be music?" Sadly, I guess that qualifies one as an old-timer, when they start sounding like their Dad.
Noticed recent Metal sounds more MIDI, like they're using fast-tempo drum machines rather than live players. (Listen to Rob Zombie & compare it to old-school power-thrash like PowerTrip)
I agree with you reved, thats why the best music is always at live concerts. I dont remember any drum machines when I saw Rob live.
Ozzfest 2001 was the same, all the bands had to learn to play their instruments again. Papa Roach sounded like a totally different band, and it was supposedly "their" songs heard on the radio?
